Federal Council confirms the separate treatment of custody and maintenance

Media Communiqué 25.5.2011

Yesterday, the Federal Council confirmed what Mrs. Federal Councilor Sommaruga had said after the round table: the two issues of custody and maintenance should again be dealt with separately.

In January 2011, Federal Councilor Sommaruga triggered a great deal of resentment among various men's and fathers' organizations with her decision to supplement the child custody bill with additional elements from maintenance law.

GeCoBi, the umbrella organization for joint parenthood, reacted immediately and launched the schickEnStei campaign, a clear and conspicuous protest action. At the same time, together with maenner.ch, we initiated a vigil in front of the Federal Palace.

As a result of these actions, a discussion with Federal Councilor Sommaruga resulted in the suggestion of a round table for all those involved. There it quickly became clear that the two issues cannot be combined, as they are at very different stages of the political process.

With the Federal Council's decision to treat the two bills separately again, it can now be assumed that the question of custody will be clarified relatively quickly. In a second step, the no less important question of maintenance payments must then be addressed. GeCoBi also lends a hand there with constructive solutions.
